The Haunting Season

Be careful what you let in…

Siler House has stood silent beneath Savannah’s moss-draped oaks for decades. Notoriously haunted, it has remained empty until college-bound Jess Perry and three of her peers gather to take part in a month-long study on the paranormal. Jess, who talks to ghosts, quickly bonds with her fellow test subjects. One is a girl possessed. Another just wants to forget. The third is a guy who really knows how to turn up the August heat, not to mention Jess’s heart rate…when he’s not resurrecting the dead.

The study soon turns into something far more sinister when they discover that Siler House and the dark forces within are determined to keep them forever. In order to escape, Jess and the others will have to open themselves up to the true horror of Siler House and channel the very evil that has welcomed them all.

My Thoughts

I decided to read the haunting season in hopes of finding a good scary book. The book was based off Jess Perry and Gage POV. Jess has the gift to see ghost however a few months before she lost her ability to see them. In hopes of being able to see ghosts again she enters a study where she lives at a haunted house for a month with three other students and a professor. Gage has the power to bring animals back to life. The other students, Bryan and Allison, too have powers. I did not connect or care for any of the characters in the book. The book was pretty stereotypical; the brave girl, Jess, the scared girl, Allison, the handsome boy, Gage, and the best friend, Bryan. That being said there is a romance between Jess and Gage. Because of the romance in this book I would rate this book pg 13 for the sex scene. Towards the end of the book I was waiting for all my questions to be answered however I was left with nothing. I do not know if the author is planning another book which would make a little sense as to why she did not include much details or answers. The book was an easy read however it was a little underwhelming. The book had a lot of potential but it just did not deliver . I would not recommend this book.

We Were Liars

we were liarsA beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

My Thoughts

The main character is Cadence Sinclair Eastman. I do not care for Cadence, to me she is a whiny spoiled brat. Throughout the book she is dealing with headaches that make it hard for her to remember what happened to her. There was not much of a plot to this story. Cadence is a part of a group called the liars. The liars include her cousin Mirren, Johnny, and Cadence love interest, Gat. Cadence and Gat are out in the open about their love. However their romance is not welcomed due to Gat being poor and not white. Every summer the liars and their family meet up at their island, where each family has their own house. I do not really know why they call themselves the liars. The liars do not really do much but just sit around and talk about nothing of importance. The liars are not close with one another which is strange since a couple of them are related and they spend every summer together. The book was an easy read and did not seem that long. I liked that the book was a mystery. My favorite part was the end. I would personally not read this book again but it was an okay read.

Rebel Belle

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper's destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can't get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she's charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper's least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him--and discovers that David's own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y'all beg for more

My Thoughts

I decided to try out rebel belle because it got quite a few five star reviews and people seems to love this book. Rebel belle is based on Harper Price POV. It was hard for me to get into the book because I just could not stand Harper; to me she was snobby and superficial. It was hard for me to connect with her character in the beginning. However as the book progressed she started to grow and develop, but not enough for me to fall in love with her character. There is a love triangle in the book between Harper, David (a guy she hates yet has to protect) and Ryan (her boyfriend). To me the love triangle did not make any sense. It was obvious who she was going to pick so the love triangle just drug out through the entire book. I would not recommend this book. I did not think the whole Paladin, oracles and mages made much sense. There were a few funny moments in the book. Be warned this book also ends in a clif hanger.

Free To Fall

What if there was an app that told you what song to listen to, what coffee to order, who to date, even what to do with your life—an app that could ensure your complete and utter happiness? What if you never had to fail or make a wrong choice?

What if you never had to fall?

Fast-forward to a time when Apple and Google have been replaced by Gnosis, a monolith corporation that has developed the most life-changing technology to ever hit the market: Lux, an app that flawlessly optimizes decision making for the best personal results. Just like everyone else, sixteen-year-old Rory Vaughn knows the key to a happy, healthy life is following what Lux recommends. When she’s accepted to the elite boarding school Theden Academy, her future happiness seems all the more assured. But once on campus, something feels wrong beneath the polished surface of her prestigious dream school. Then she meets North, a handsome townie who doesn’t use Lux, and begins to fall for him and his outsider way of life. Soon, Rory is going against Lux’s recommendations, listening instead to the inner voice that everyone has been taught to ignore — a choice that leads her to uncover a truth neither she nor the world ever saw coming.

My Thoughts

I decided to read free to fall because the concept intrigued me. The book is written in Aurora (Rory) Vaughn POV. I liked Rory’s character; she is smart and a little insecure. The author did very well with making it easy to relate to her and putting you in her shoes. As the book progresses Rory grows: she changes from being insecure into being brave. In free to fall there is a romance between Rory and North, the romance is so genuine that you cannot help but fall in love with them. The setting seemed pretty plausible to me, an app that can control everything (check) and a corrupt government (check). It was very easy to follow the authors writing: to me it was an easy read. But being an easy read does not mean that the book was boring. Free to fall had everything I look for in a book, it had so many twists that I could not put the book down. I would recommend people to read free to fall. I cannot think of anything bad about this book.

The Fault In Our Stars Movie

The fault in our stars film debut at no 1, being released, June 6, 2014. I loved the movie, not as much as I loved the book but it was close. There were some changes between the book and the film; such as the Oranjee scene. In the book Hazel and Augustus dine outside; in the film Hazel and Augustus dine inside. So why the subtle change? According to Molly Hughes the production designer for the film told HuffPost Entertainment. "We decided to build the Oranjee scene as an interior because when I went to scout Amsterdam for exterior locations, we realized that it would be freezingand dark and likely raining in October, which doesn’t bode well for a romantic dinner. We therefore built the interior in Pittsburgh,” "I hope that the fact that Gus and Hazel were surrounded by fantastical trees and candles and lights helped create an equally romantic setting!"Also in the book Hazel has a girl friend, Kaitlyn, however she apparently did not make the cut for the movie. For more change between the book and film check out; http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/06/the-fault-in-our-stars-book-movie_n_5433348.html.Even with all the changes I still fell in love with Hazel and Augustus. At first I did not agree with Shailene Woodley being casted as Hazel. I watched her on secret life of an American teenager and did not think she was a great actress nor a good choice. As for Ansel Elgort the actor who played Gus, I did not recognize him. So after researching Ansel Elgort I found out that he was actually in Divergent, another film Shailene Woodley stared in. So who was Ansel Elgort in divergent? He was actually her brother: which just made the whole falling in love with each other a little awkward. So try to take the two films separately. That being said i thought Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were good picks for Hazel and Augustus.

Fun Fact

The fault in our stars was inspired and dedicated to Esther Grace Earl. Esther died in 2010, she was only 16. Like Hazel in the fault in our stars she too had thyroid cancer and wore a nasal cannula. However the similarities stop there between Hazel and Esther. This star won’t go out is a collection of journals, fiction, letters and sketches that Esther did. This Star won’t go out was recently published January 28, 2014.

The Fault In Our Stars

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years. Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

My Thoughts

I decided to read this book due to the movie being released. I also have been wanting to read this book for some time. The fault in our stars is based on Hazel’s POV. I liked Hazel (Hazel Grace) and Augustus (Gus). I know a lot of people say the book is unrealistic because of how they talk: such as they give long speeches with deep meaning. To me that is what made me fall in love with their characters. Hazel’s personality is that she is real, throughout the book she does not sugarcoat anything, she knows she has cancer and she is going to die. Augustus is pretty much the male version of Hazel. There is a romance in the book between Hazel and Augustus which is instant love. The love between them felt like true love. The romance to me was the main focus. It is what helped Hazel grow throughout the book. The book seems plausible to me. It showed the life of two teens, whom have cancer and what they go through. I like John Greens writing style. It was not an action packed book. That being said it was also not slow paced book either. Once I started reading, I was addicted and could barely put the book down. I would recommend this book to people who want a good book to cry to. Be warned this book is an emotion rollercoaster.

Interview with the authors of Branded!

Branded(sinners) is a pretty unique book, where did you come up with the idea?
Abi came up with the concept of branding people with the Seven Sins when she was in the shower one day. Then she began to write. After starting, she sent what she had written to Missy because her & Missy talked books all the time. Missy then added some more and then sent it back. So, the book grew as we each added more and more. Honestly, we didn’t really have a roadmap for the plot when we started. We kinda just tweaked the storyline as we went.

What was your least favorite part of the writing process?
Probably the constant editing and late nights spent hunched over our laptops. We both have young children so coffee helps us survive the daytime. Haha.

Do you base your characters off people you know?
Sometimes. ;) I’d say our main character, Lexi, is a mix of both of us.

What made you decide to give the book a face lift and change some things in the book?
We felt like we had grown as writers throughout the year and wanted to make it better. There were some scenes we knew needed work. I’d say that both of us feel like we gave the rewrite all we had… and we’re thrilled with the finished manuscript!

If you were branded what would your brand be?
Missy- probably red for wrath. haha

Rumor has it, that this will/ is becoming a series. Is that true?
Yes.

If so, what can we look forward to in the upcoming books?
More action and definitely more surprises. We laid out the formula for all three books now, so we’ve got some secrets up our sleeves. 

Thank you again for taking time to answer some of my questions. I look forward to reading more of the sinners series.
Thank you!

Branded (A Sinners Series)

branded original

Fifty years ago the Commander came into power and murdered all who opposed him. In his warped mind, the seven deadly sins were the downfall of society. He created the Hole where sinners are branded according to their sins and might survive a few years. At best.

Now LUST wraps around my neck like blue fingers strangling me. I’ve been accused of a crime I didn’t commit and now the Hole is my new home.

Darkness. Death. Violence. Pain.

Now every day is a fight for survival. But I won’t die. I won’t let them win.

The Hole can’t keep me. The Hole can’t break me.
I am more than my brand. I’m a fighter.
My name is Lexi Hamilton, and this is my story

My Thoughts

I read this book a few months ago and fell in love with it. This book had everything in it: starting with strong heroine, gorgeous hero, forbidden romance, trustworthy friendships and an evil villain. This book to me was very unique because I had yet to hear of a story line such as this. The characters grow and develop throughout the book. I was excited that this book did not make me fall in love with a character just to have them turn out to be the bad guy. All the characters were straight forward. But that does not make the book boring by any means. Though out the book you learn of the hard ship Lexi had/has to face, and get engulfed in the forbidden love affair. This book is a roller coaster ride of emotions with ups and downs. It also has a lot of twists and turns that you may have not seen coming.

So why am I reviewing it now?

branded revamp

REVAMPED!
Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki just released branded again! With a couple modifications. They gave the cover a complete face lift. If you are concerned because you did read the first one and now you are afraid the plot has changed (like I was). Have no fear they kept the plot the same. The difference between the book is that their writing style has grown and improved and they also added scenes to the revamp version.
